My Hybrid Shaving Routine and Porcelain-Sink Stropping Method
A multi-blade razor cartridge is a small everyday item, but I began wondering why it had to be replaced so often. Could I change the way I shaved and cared for the blade so that it stayed usable longer? I tried different approaches, repeated them in daily use, and gradually settled on the routine described here.
I have used this method for several years. In my own shaving routine, one cartridge can remain usable for more than a year. The photographs I use with this article compare an unused cartridge with one I actually used for over a year.
1. My Shaving Routine: Electric First, Wet Finish
I normally shave five days a week for work and another one or two days on weekends when I go out. I first use a rechargeable electric shaver to remove most of my beard. I then use a manual multi-blade razor for a wet finishing pass around areas such as the neck, jawline, and under the nose.
This became my basic hybrid routine. The electric shaver handles most of the cutting, while the multi-blade cartridge is used mainly for the close finish.
2. Why I Began Paying Attention to Blade Care
A razor edge has to cut beard hair repeatedly, but the condition of the cartridge after shaving also matters. Multi-blade cartridges have several very thin blades positioned close together. Water and shaving residue can remain in those narrow spaces after use.
Instead of concentrating only on the shaving itself, I began paying equal attention to what happened to the cartridge after the shave: how it was rinsed, how residue was removed, and how much moisture remained before storage.
That eventually led to a simple routine built around lubrication, porcelain-sink stropping, thorough rinsing, water removal, and drying.
3. Shampoo Foam for My Wet Finishing Shave
When I wash my hair, I already have shampoo foam available, so I use some of it as lubrication for the wet finishing shave. In my routine it provides enough glide for the multi-blade razor to move smoothly over the areas left after the electric shave.
This is simply what I use in my own routine. Shampoo formulas and skin sensitivity differ, so the blade-care method itself does not depend on using shampoo; another preferred shaving lubricant can be used instead.
4. The Key Step: Porcelain-Sink Stropping
After the wet shave, and before the final cleaning, I use the smooth porcelain surface of the bathroom sink for stropping. The idea is simple: the cartridge is moved across the smooth surface in the direction opposite to the normal shaving stroke.
I first swirl the cartridge through the water left from washing my hair so that the blades are wet. I place the cartridge flat against a smooth part of the porcelain sink and gently push it in the direction opposite to shaving about three to five times.
I then wet the cartridge again and repeat the same stropping sequence. I use light pressure. I do not drag the cartridge over the porcelain in the normal shaving direction.
I have made this a regular part of every shave for years. When I use the cartridge again the following day, it continues to give me the clean finishing shave I expect.
5. Final Rinse, Water Removal, and Drying
After stropping, I rinse the cartridge thoroughly. I then shake the razor several times to remove as much water as possible from between the blades.
After the water has been shaken off, I either allow the razor to dry or place it in the toothbrush sterilizer/dryer I use at home. I do not leave the cartridge sitting wet after use.
The full routine is therefore: electric first pass → wet finishing shave → wet the cartridge → porcelain-sink stropping → wet and repeat → final rinse → shake off water → dry and store.
6. My Actual Result: More Than One Year on One Cartridge
I have followed this routine for several years. My normal shaving frequency is about five to seven days a week, so the cartridge is used regularly. With the hybrid shaving and after-use care described above, I have been able to keep one multi-blade cartridge in use for more than a year while maintaining a clean finishing shave.

7. What I Learned From This Everyday Idea
The method began with a simple everyday question: does a multi-blade cartridge really have to be replaced so often, or can the way it is used and maintained make a difference?
I tried different approaches and kept refining the routine through repeated use. For me, the combination of an electric first pass, wet finishing shave, porcelain-sink stropping, careful rinsing, water removal, and drying has made a clear difference in how long the cartridge remains usable.
This article records my own method and long-term experience. I am not claiming that every cartridge or every shaving condition will produce an identical lifespan. What I can show is the routine I actually use and the cartridge that has remained in service for more than a year.

저는 이 방법을 몇 년째 사용하고 있습니다. 제 면도 습관에서는 다중 면도날 하나를 1년 이상 사용할 수 있었고, 이 글에 사용하는 사진은 미사용 새 면도날과 제가 실제로 1년 이상 사용한 면도날을 직접 비교한 것입니다.
1. 전기면도기로 먼저, 다중날로 습식 마무리
저는 평일에는 출근 때문에 주 5일 정도 면도하고, 주말에도 외출하는 날이면 1~2일 정도 면도합니다. 먼저 충전식 전기면도기로 수염 대부분을 정리하고, 목 주변이나 턱선, 코 밑처럼 더 깔끔한 마무리가 필요한 부분은 다중날 면도기로 습식 면도를 합니다.
이것이 제가 사용하는 기본적인 하이브리드 면도 방법입니다. 전기면도기가 대부분의 수염을 먼저 처리하고, 다중날 면도기는 깔끔한 마무리를 담당합니다.
2. 면도만큼 사용 후 관리에도 관심을 갖게 되었습니다
면도날은 반복해서 수염을 자르기 때문에 당연히 부담을 받습니다. 하지만 다중날 카트리지는 여러 개의 얇은 날이 좁은 간격으로 붙어 있어 면도가 끝난 뒤에도 날 사이에 물기와 잔류물이 남기 쉽습니다.
그래서 저는 면도하는 순간만 보지 않고, 면도가 끝난 뒤 카트리지를 어떻게 세척하고 잔류물을 제거하며 물기를 없애는지도 함께 생각하기 시작했습니다.
그렇게 반복해서 사용하면서 윤활, 세면대 스트로핑, 충분한 세척, 물기 제거와 건조를 하나의 관리 방법으로 정리하게 되었습니다.
3. 습식 마무리에는 샴푸 거품을 사용합니다
저는 샤워하면서 머리를 감을 때 생기는 샴푸 거품을 얼굴에 묻혀 습식 마무리 면도의 윤활제로 사용합니다. 전기면도기로 1차 면도를 한 뒤 남은 부분을 다중날 면도기로 정리할 때 제 사용 조건에서는 충분히 부드럽게 면도할 수 있었습니다.
이것은 제가 실제로 사용하는 방법입니다. 샴푸의 성분과 피부 민감도는 사람마다 다르므로 샴푸 사용 자체가 면도날 관리법의 필수 조건은 아닙니다. 자신에게 맞는 면도용 윤활제를 사용해도 이후 관리 과정은 같습니다.
4. 핵심은 세면대 스트로핑입니다
습식 면도가 끝나고 최종 세척을 하기 전에 욕실 세면대의 매끄러운 도자기 표면을 이용해 스트로핑을 합니다. 방법은 간단합니다. 실제 면도할 때와 반대 방향으로 면도날을 매끄러운 표면 위에서 움직이는 것입니다.
먼저 머리를 감은 물에 면도날을 한 번씩 휘저어 날과 날 사이에 물이 충분히 묻게 합니다. 그 상태에서 카트리지를 세면대의 매끄러운 부분에 평평하게 대고 면도 방향과 반대쪽으로 가볍게 3~5회 정도 밀어줍니다.
다시 물에 적신 뒤 같은 스트로핑을 한 번 더 반복합니다. 힘은 가볍게 줍니다. 실제 면도하듯 세면대 표면을 당기는 방향으로 움직이지 않습니다.
저는 면도할 때마다 이 과정을 몇 년째 반복하고 있습니다. 다음날 같은 면도날을 다시 사용했을 때도 제가 원하는 깔끔한 마무리 면도가 계속 유지됩니다.
5. 마지막은 세척, 물기 제거, 건조입니다
스트로핑이 끝나면 면도기를 깨끗하게 헹굽니다. 그리고 면도기를 여러 번 흔들어 날 사이에 남아 있는 물기를 최대한 제거합니다.
물기를 털어낸 뒤에는 자연 건조하거나 집에서 사용하는 칫솔 소독기(살균·건조기)에 넣어 보관합니다. 사용한 카트리지를 물기가 남은 상태로 그대로 두지 않는 것이 제 관리 방법의 한 부분입니다.
전체 순서는 전기면도기로 1차 면도 → 다중날 습식 마무리 → 면도날 적시기 → 세면대 스트로핑 → 다시 적시고 반복 → 최종 세척 → 물기 털기 → 건조 및 보관입니다.
6. 나의 실제 결과: 면도날 하나를 1년 이상
저는 이 방법을 몇 년째 계속 사용하고 있습니다. 평일 출근 시 주 5일, 주말 외출 시 1~2일 정도 면도하기 때문에 면도 빈도가 적은 편은 아닙니다. 하이브리드 면도와 사용 후 관리 과정을 반복하면서 하나의 다중날 카트리지를 1년 이상 사용하고 있으며, 마무리 면도도 계속 깔끔하게 하고 있습니다.

7. 작은 생활 아이디어가 하나의 습관이 되었습니다
처음부터 거창한 실험을 하려던 것은 아닙니다. 다중 면도날을 왜 자주 교체해야 하는지, 사용하는 방법과 관리 방법을 바꾸면 조금 더 오래 쓸 수 있는지 궁금했던 것이 시작이었습니다.
