Overview
Parts 1 through 4 moved from mechanism to evidence, manufacturer guidance, and the electrochemical basis of re-forming. Part 5 turns that knowledge into a preventive quality-control framework for a finished SMPS.
The proposal in this article is a Soft-Start No-Load Aging / Activation Procedure for long-idle SMPS products before they return to normal field service.
This is not a capacitor manufacturer's universal procedure for complete power supplies. It is a product-level preventive-QC framework derived from the field case, the observed C3/C4 failure, and the manufacturer guidance reviewed earlier. Exact voltage steps, dwell times, load levels, and limits must be defined and validated for each SMPS model.

01 │ From Long-Term Electrolytic Capacitor Guidance to SMPS Preventive Management
Component manufacturers describe voltage treatment for individual electrolytic capacitors, but a finished SMPS is a complete electrical system.
Therefore, the practical QC question is not how to reproduce a capacitor-level reforming circuit inside every adapter. The question is how to avoid sending a long-idle product directly from storage to full field stress without any intermediate screening.
A product-level activation procedure creates that intermediate step.
02 │ When a Long-Idle SMPS Should Be Flagged
A product should be flagged when its storage period exceeds the company's normal inventory cycle or an internally defined long-term-storage threshold.
In our own preventive action, stock held for more than six months is treated as long-term inventory and requires full reinspection before shipment. Because adapters normally have short lead times, stock older than six months is unusual and therefore deserves additional attention.
The threshold is a management trigger, not proof that a capacitor has degraded. Its purpose is to make abnormal storage history visible before shipment.
03 │ Step 1 — Pre-Activation Screening
Before any activation, the product should first be screened for conditions that make energization inappropriate.
Checks can include model and lot identification, storage history, external damage, cable and connector condition, abnormal odor or contamination, label condition, and any available history of previous failures.
If there is evidence of swelling, leakage, vent operation, rupture, severe corrosion, damaged insulation, or other physical failure, the unit should not enter an activation cycle. It should be held for failure analysis or disposition.
04 │ Step 2 — Controlled No-Load Energization
The next stage is controlled energization with no load, or with the minimum load required by the product design.
The purpose is to allow the power supply to reach operating condition without immediately adding full output-load stress. A programmable and protected source is preferable in a controlled inspection environment because input behavior can be observed and abnormal current or instability can be detected.
The exact input-voltage profile and dwell time must be established by engineering validation for the specific SMPS. This article does not prescribe one universal voltage ramp for all adapters.
05 │ Step 3 — Stabilization and Observation
After energization, the product should be allowed a defined stabilization period while basic behavior is observed.
Useful observations include output voltage, abnormal input current, unusual sound, odor, temperature rise, repeated protection cycling, output instability, and other symptoms that indicate the unit should not proceed to further loading.
The objective is not to 'age away' a defect. It is to give a long-idle product a controlled opportunity to stabilize while abnormal units are detected before full-load stress.
06 │ Step 4 — Progressive Electrical Loading
If the product remains stable, electrical loading can then be increased in validated stages rather than moving immediately from storage to maximum load.
At each stage, output voltage and operating stability should remain within the product specification. Temperature behavior and protection operation should also remain normal.
The number of load steps and the duration of each step are product-specific. They should be defined from design limits, production-test capability, safety requirements, and engineering validation.
07 │ Step 5 — Final Electrical Verification
Activation is not complete until the product passes the same electrical criteria required for release.
For the 12 V / 5 A adapter in our case, relevant checks include output voltage at the required load and Ripple & Noise against the 200 mVp-p maximum specification. Other normal outgoing-inspection items should remain applicable.
A long-stored unit should therefore not be released merely because it survived energization. It must still demonstrate normal electrical performance.
Proposed Product-Level Activation Flow
| Step | Stage | Main Check | Disposition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pre-Activation Screening | Identity, storage history, visual condition, cables/connectors, previous failure information | Abnormal physical condition → HOLD/REJECT |
| 2 | Controlled No-Load Energization | Controlled source, no-load/minimum-load operation, abnormal input/output behavior | Stable operation required before proceeding |
| 3 | Stabilization / Observation | Output voltage, current behavior, sound, odor, temperature, protection cycling | Any abnormality → HOLD |
| 4 | Progressive Load Test | Increase load in validated stages; observe voltage, stability, temperature and protection | Remain within product limits |
| 5 | Final Verification | Required outgoing-inspection items, including output and Ripple & Noise | All release criteria PASS |
08 │ Pass, Hold, and Reject Criteria
A practical control plan needs clear disposition rules.
PASS: the unit completes activation and all specified inspection items remain within limits.
HOLD: the unit shows unstable behavior, unusual current, abnormal temperature, intermittent output, or another condition requiring engineering review.
REJECT: the unit shows physical damage, protection failure, electrical values outside specification, or a confirmed component failure.
These categories prevent an activation process from becoming an excuse to repeatedly power-cycle a questionable unit until it appears to pass.
09 │ How to Build the Procedure into Quality Control
The procedure becomes useful only when it is part of the quality system rather than an informal technician habit.
For long-term inventory, the supplier can be instructed to perform full reinspection before shipment, record the inspection date and result, and identify the product as re-inspected. In our current practice, a [Reinspection] sticker is attached in the nameplate area for long-term stock that has completed the required reinspection.
Traceability should include model, lot, storage period, activation/reinspection date, inspection result, and disposition of any abnormal units.
This turns storage history into a controlled quality characteristic.
10 │ What This Changes in Practice
The central change is simple: a product that passed inspection years ago is not automatically treated as if no time has passed.
Long-idle inventory is identified, screened, activated under controlled conditions, electrically verified, and only then returned to normal shipment or field use.
This approach does not claim that every long-stored SMPS will fail. It applies the preventive-QC principle learned from the field case: detect abnormal condition before the next process or customer is forced to discover it.
Part 6 will close the series with a practical checklist of what should be verified before long-stored SMPS products return to the field.
Important Boundary
This proposed flow is a preventive-QC framework, not a universal electrical procedure. Product-specific voltage steps, dwell times, load stages, safety controls, and acceptance limits must be validated by qualified engineering personnel.

Screening
Activation Flow
| Step |
08 │ PASS, HOLD, REJECT
PASS: Activation
