Overview
Part 1 examined what can happen to the dielectric oxide layer of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor during prolonged voltage-free storage. Part 2 returns to the actual failed 12 V / 5 A SMPS adapter and asks a different question: what does the physical and electrical evidence itself show?
The purpose is to separate what was observed, what changed after C3 and C4 were replaced, and what can reasonably be inferred from those results. The strongest evidence in this case is the before-and-after comparison under the same 5 A load condition.

01 │ From Field Failure to Laboratory Evidence
At the installation site, technicians did not perform oscilloscope analysis or detailed component diagnosis. The practical field observation was that some adapters did not operate normally when the delayed project was finally deployed.
The failed units were returned for laboratory investigation. Only then could the output behavior, Ripple & Noise, and internal component condition be examined in detail.
The field identified a failure. The laboratory investigation characterized the failure.
02 │ What Was Found in the Returned Adapter
Inspection of the returned adapter revealed physical damage associated with the electrolytic capacitors identified as C3 and C4.
Visible damage is important evidence, but appearance alone does not establish the complete failure mechanism. A ruptured or vented capacitor shows that the component experienced an abnormal condition; it does not by itself identify the exact sequence of electrical, thermal, storage, or component-related factors.
03 │ Why C3 and C4 Became the First Focus
C3 and C4 became the first focus because two observations pointed in the same direction: they showed physical damage, and the adapter showed abnormal output performance.
The practical question was straightforward: if the damaged C3 and C4 were replaced while the rest of the investigated adapter remained unchanged, would the electrical behavior recover?
A substitution test cannot explain every preceding event, but it can provide strong evidence about whether the replaced components were directly involved in the observed malfunction.
04 │ The 5 A Load Test Before Replacement
With the adapter operating under a 5 A load, the output was unstable and rose from approximately 7 Vdc rather than remaining within the specified output range.
The nominal output was 12 Vdc with a ±5% tolerance, giving an acceptable range of 11.40 to 12.60 Vdc. The observed output was therefore clearly outside the required range.
05 │ Ripple & Noise: 512 mVp-p Against a 200 mVp-p Limit
Ripple & Noise under the same 5 A load condition measured 512 mVp-p.
The specification was 200 mVp-p maximum. The measured value was therefore more than two and a half times the specified maximum.
The abnormal DC output and excessive Ripple & Noise occurred in the same failed adapter before C3/C4 replacement.
06 │ What Changed After C3/C4 Replacement
C3 and C4 were replaced and the adapter was tested again under a 5 A load.
The output measured 11.50 Vdc, within the specified 11.40 to 12.60 Vdc range. Ripple & Noise fell from 512 mVp-p to 52 mVp-p, comfortably below the 200 mVp-p maximum.
The important point is not merely that two numbers improved. Both previously abnormal output characteristics returned to specification after C3 and C4 were replaced.
07 │ The Before-and-After Evidence
| Test Item | Before C3/C4 Replacement | After C3/C4 Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Output Voltage Specification | 12 Vdc typical; ±5% (11.40–12.60 Vdc) | 12 Vdc typical; ±5% (11.40–12.60 Vdc) |
| Output @ 5 A | Unstable, rising from approx. 7 Vdc — FAIL | 11.50 Vdc — PASS |
| Ripple & Noise | 512 mVp-p — FAIL | 52 mVp-p — PASS |
| R/N Specification | 200 mVp-p Max | 200 mVp-p Max |
After C3/C4 replacement, the output returned to specification and Ripple & Noise decreased from 512 mVp-p to 52 mVp-p.
08 │ What the Replacement Test Strongly Suggests
The replacement test strongly supports the conclusion that the condition of C3 and C4 was directly associated with the abnormal output and excessive Ripple & Noise observed in the investigated adapter.
This is stronger evidence than visual inspection alone because the electrical behavior changed after a controlled component replacement.
However, “C3/C4 were involved in the malfunction” and “we have proven why C3/C4 failed” are not the same conclusion.
09 │ What the Evidence Still Does Not Prove
The test does not by itself prove that long-term storage was the sole root cause of the capacitor damage.
It also does not reconstruct the exact moment at which the dielectric condition changed, leakage current increased, internal temperature rose, gas was generated, or the pressure vent operated. Those are possible mechanisms that require support from component behavior, manufacturer guidance, and the wider failure history.
Other factors such as component variation, temperature history, ripple-current stress, circuit conditions, and manufacturing quality must not be excluded without evidence.
The correct conclusion at this stage is narrower: C3/C4 damage and the abnormal electrical output were closely linked, and replacing C3/C4 restored the measured performance of the investigated adapter.
10 │ Where the Investigation Goes Next
Part 1 established that prolonged voltage-free storage can affect the dielectric condition and leakage-current behavior of aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Part 2 has now established what the failed hardware and before-and-after measurements show in this case.
Part 3 will examine what aluminum electrolytic capacitor manufacturers recommend for long-stored capacitors, including voltage treatment and re-forming, and how those recommendations should be interpreted for finished SMPS products.
Author’s Note
The measurements in this article are the recorded results from the investigated 12 V / 5 A SMPS adapter case. They show the relationship between the damaged C3/C4 capacitors and the observed electrical malfunction; they do not claim that every long-stored SMPS will fail in the same way.

|---|---|---|
12 Vdc Typical; ±5% (11.40–12.60 Vdc) | 12 Vdc Typical; ±5% (11.40–12.60 Vdc) |
| Ripple & Noise | 512 mVp-p — FAIL | 52 mVp-p — PASS |
| R/N 규격 | 200 mVp-p Max | 200 mVp-p Max |
