Overview
The previous article followed a real 12 V / 5 A SMPS adapter failure from field symptoms to damaged aluminum electrolytic capacitors and abnormal electrical measurements.
That investigation left one question unresolved:
How can an electrolytic capacitor change while the SMPS is not operating?
To answer it, we need to look inside the capacitor—not at the visible aluminum can, but at a dielectric layer so thin that its condition cannot be judged by appearance alone.
This Part 1 examines what capacitor manufacturers say about the aluminum oxide dielectric, long periods without applied voltage, leakage current, and the recovery process that begins when voltage is applied again. It also separates those general mechanisms from what has and has not yet been proven about the failed C3 and C4 capacitors in our field case.

01 │ The Hidden Layer That Makes an Electrolytic Capacitor Work
An aluminum electrolytic capacitor stores energy using an aluminum oxide film formed on the anode foil as its dielectric.
The aluminum foil provides a large effective electrode area, while the oxide film electrically separates the electrodes. The electrolyte participates in the electrochemical system and provides contact to the oxide-covered anode structure.
This is important because the dielectric is not a thick plastic sheet or ceramic body. It is an electrochemically formed oxide layer whose electrical condition is related to the history of the capacitor.
In normal use, the applied DC voltage helps maintain the dielectric condition through electrochemical re-forming.
02 │ The Dielectric Is Not Simply an Inert Insulator
A common mental model is that an unused electronic component simply waits in the warehouse unchanged.
For aluminum electrolytic capacitors, that model is incomplete.
Nichicon explains that during long no-load storage, a reaction between the anode oxide layer and the electrolyte can reduce the withstand voltage of the dielectric. Nippon Chemi-Con likewise describes chemical reactions between the anode oxide layer and electrolyte during prolonged high-temperature storage.
In other words, removing electrical operating stress does not mean that every internal process stops.
Nothing may be switching. Nothing may be heating from normal SMPS operation. But the electrochemical system is still aging with time.
03 │ What Changes During Voltage-Free Storage?
When an aluminum electrolytic capacitor remains without applied voltage for a prolonged period, the oxide dielectric is no longer continuously regenerated by the electrochemical action associated with normal voltage application.
TDK states that the oxide layer may deteriorate during voltage-free storage, particularly at higher temperatures, because there is no leakage current transporting oxygen ions to the anode to regenerate the oxide.
Nichicon describes the same practical result from a different angle: the reaction between the anode oxide layer and electrolyte can lower dielectric withstand voltage, causing leakage current to increase when voltage is later applied.
This does not mean that every stored capacitor will fail. Storage temperature, storage duration, capacitor design, previous history, and application conditions all matter.
04 │ Why Leakage Current Can Rise After Storage
An ideal capacitor would block DC current after charging, but a real aluminum electrolytic capacitor allows a small leakage current.
After prolonged voltage-free storage, that leakage current can initially be higher than normal when voltage is reapplied.
TDK warns that, depending on storage conditions, leakage current during the first few minutes after power application can be far above the normal level. Nippon Chemi-Con also notes that leakage current is temperature-dependent and increases more rapidly as storage temperature rises.
This matters in an SMPS because leakage current is not only a number on a capacitor specification sheet. Excess current can create internal heating and can affect circuit behavior during startup.
Under severe conditions, Nippon Chemi-Con states that large leakage current can generate enough internal heat to contribute to dielectric breakdown and operation of the pressure relief vent.
05 │ What Happens When Voltage Is Applied Again?
The story does not end with deterioration.
When DC voltage is reapplied under suitable conditions, the oxide layer can be regenerated by an electrochemical process commonly called re-forming or voltage treatment.
Nichicon states that leakage current tends to return toward its initial level through the re-forming action of the electrolyte. Rubycon similarly states that voltage treatment can reduce increased leakage current in long-stored capacitors.
This self-recovery behavior is one reason aluminum electrolytic capacitors are unusual: the same electrochemical system that can change during storage can also rebuild the dielectric condition when voltage is applied appropriately.
However, this point requires caution. Rubycon explicitly notes that other characteristics degraded during storage do not necessarily return to their original condition. Re-forming should therefore not be interpreted as a universal repair for an aged or damaged capacitor.
06 │ Temperature and Storage Time Matter
Storage is not defined by time alone.
Temperature strongly influences the rate of change. Nippon Chemi-Con recommends normal-temperature, normal-humidity storage away from direct sunlight and notes that high temperature accelerates increases in leakage current and tanδ as well as decreases in capacitance.
Its current storage guidance gives a typical recommended packaged storage environment of 5°C to 35°C and 75% RH or lower, while noting that storage limits depend on the product and are commonly in the range of two to three years.
Nichicon likewise states that capacitors stored for less than two years at 5°C to 35°C can generally be used without voltage treatment, while recommending treatment for capacitors stored for longer periods.
These values are manufacturer guidance, not a universal rule for every capacitor or every finished SMPS. The applicable series datasheet and manufacturer instructions should always take priority.
07 │ What the Manufacturers Agree On
| Manufacturer | Long-Term Storage Guidance |
|---|---|
| Nichicon | No-load storage can increase leakage current as dielectric withstand voltage falls; voltage treatment/re-forming is recommended after long storage. |
| Nippon Chemi-Con | High-temperature storage can promote reactions between the oxide layer and electrolyte, reducing withstand voltage and increasing leakage current. |
| TDK | Voltage-free storage can deteriorate the oxide layer; initial leakage current after storage can be much higher until the oxide regenerates. |
| Rubycon | Characteristics can deteriorate even while unused; voltage treatment can reduce increased leakage current, but other degraded characteristics may not recover. |
The terminology differs slightly, but the engineering message is consistent:
Long-term storage without applied voltage is not necessarily an electrically neutral condition for an aluminum electrolytic capacitor.
08 │ What This Means for Our 12 V / 5 A SMPS Case
The failed adapters in our case had remained electrically inactive for an extended period after passing the required inspections.
When they returned from the field, damaged C3 and C4 electrolytic capacitors were found. One representative adapter showed unstable output under a 5 A load and 512 mVp-p Ripple & Noise. Replacing C3 and C4 restored the output to 11.50 Vdc and reduced Ripple & Noise to 52 mVp-p.
The manufacturer literature reviewed in Part 1 provides a technically plausible mechanism connecting prolonged voltage-free storage with changes in dielectric condition and increased leakage current.
But plausibility is not proof of the complete failure chain.
The field evidence tells us which components were damaged and what electrical behavior changed. The manufacturer literature tells us what can happen to aluminum electrolytic capacitors during long storage. The next task is to determine how strongly those two bodies of evidence can be connected.
09 │ What Part 1 Does Not Prove
It would be tempting to conclude that long-term storage alone caused the C3 and C4 capacitors to rupture.
That conclusion would go beyond the evidence presented so far.
Capacitor failure can involve multiple factors, including temperature history, applied voltage, ripple current, component quality, circuit conditions, manufacturing variation, and storage environment.
Part 1 therefore establishes the storage-related dielectric mechanism as an important engineering hypothesis supported by capacitor manufacturers—not as a final root-cause verdict for every failed sample.
That distinction matters in failure analysis.
10 │ The Next Question
We now know that an aluminum electrolytic capacitor can change during long periods without applied voltage, and that increased leakage current after storage is a recognized manufacturer concern.
The next question returns to the physical evidence from our failed SMPS adapters:
What do the ruptured C3/C4 capacitors, unstable output, and the 512 mVp-p measurement actually tell us?
Part 2 will examine those failed components and electrical measurements more closely, separating what was directly observed from what must still be inferred.

Author’s Note
This Part 1 explains the storage-related dielectric mechanism using capacitor-manufacturer technical guidance and connects that mechanism carefully to the field case introduced in the main article.
Manufacturer guidance describes general capacitor behavior. It should not be treated as proof that long-term storage was the sole cause of every failure observed in the returned SMPS adapters. The following parts will continue to separate measured field evidence, engineering interpretation, and manufacturer recommendations.

Nippon Chemi-Con
Nippon Chemi-Con
Nippon Chemi-Con
| Nippon Chemi-Con |
