Zi Wei Dou Shu uses birth date and birth hour to construct its palace and star framework. Traditional Chinese time divides the day into twelve two-hour periods, often called shichen.

Some modern Zi Wei Dou Shu practitioners and calculators use birthplace longitude to adjust official clock time toward local mean solar time or true solar time.

Because the Hour Pillar depends on birth time, location can become relevant when deciding which time should actually be used.
This is different from Western Astrology. BaZi does not generally need birthplace in order to calculate an Ascendant from the local horizon.
